Prostate Pain: What Causes Your Discomfort?Prostate pain signifies a problem with the prostate gland in men. This walnut-sized gland is found beneath the bladder and it surrounds the urethra, the tube that helps discharge both urine and semen through a man's penis. When it malfunctions, it can cause a variety of problems and serious pain in a man's groin region. There are a number of reasons why a man will suffer pain due to prostate problems. What causes prostate pain? One of the most common causes of prostate pain is an enlarged prostate gland. This gland surrounds the urethra and as it grows and swells, it presses on that tube, causing pain during urination and ejaculation. Unfortunately the cause of the swelling is unknown. Research has shown that age is a factor in the enlargement of the prostate gland. Hormones - namely testosterone - are also a major player in this common problem. Men who have had their testicles removed at an early age for whatever reason do not seem to have prostate enlargement problems. Another cause of prostate pain is prostate cancer. As the cancer metastasizes, men will feel the pain that commonly comes with any form of cancer. Chemotherapy, surgery, and hormone therapy are all used to both alleviate the pain and reduce the production of problematic hormonal problems. There are early warning detection methods available and anyone who is at high risk for the cancer should have this screening performed by their physician. Symptoms of prostate problems There are symptoms attached to prostate pain and every man should be aware of what some of them are. Frequent urination, blockage of urine flow, dribbling, leakage, straining to empty the bladder, unusual sleeping patterns, and the feeling of needing to urinate urgently are all good signs that a man could have a prostate problem. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should contact your physician as soon as possible so that you can be examined and treated for whatever the problem may be. Medication and other treatments can be administered immediately to soothe the prostate pain and hopefully forestall any other problems before they can get worse.
